All eyes will be on Vansittart Park this Sunday for the opening round of the Limestone Coast open women’s football league.
With nine teams registered to play this season, one team will enjoy a rest each week, with Penola sitting on the sidelines for round 1 and giving its players an addition seven days to prepare.
Kongorong will play Millicent at 10am to open the season and these two teams had an up-and-down 2022 season and will look to gain a few spots on the ladder with the ambition to play finals football.
Kongorong will have some fresh and young legs to run the wide open spaces and Millicent will be on a high having the Under 16 premiership coach at the helm.
This looks set to be a close game and it will be the fittest team that can adapt to the warm weather conditions that will come out on top.
At 11.35 Casterton-Sandford will play last season’s premiers Kybybolite.
Both these teams were big improvers in the competition from 2022 and will need to be on the money come Sunday.
Both sides have quality players and experience that will hold them in good shape come game day.
As this is the first game of the year both sides will be a bit nervous, but it will come down to the team that settles first as to who will take the victory.
At 1.10pm Mundulla will come up against last year’s runners up South Gambier at the hottest point of the day and will need to be thoroughly hydrated to maintain peak fitness.
South Gambier was unbeaten right up until the big dance last season but will be keen to make a statement in 2023.
Mundulla will also be a great team to watch and will play some good, hard football, with plenty of players who will also like the open space to run at Vansittart Park.
This will be a tough hit-out for both teams and it will likely be too close to call with the result going down to the final moments.
Finally, the home team North Gambier will play host to Kalangadoo at 2.45pm.
North has had a good lead-up with the Under 16s being runners up and will have some of the girls come up to its senior ranks, while Kalangadoo did struggle to put numbers on the park but will be keen to play a game.
This game could be a one-sided affair, but football can swing either way if either team wants to win bad enough.
Coaches will be eager to see players adapt and play in a range of positions as the season gets under way to fine-tune game plans as the year progresses.
