Young athlete shines despite wrist injury

Despite competing while wearing a cast over a broken wrist, Tenison Woods College student Leila Croker picked up three medals at the recent SA All School Games in Adelaide for athletics.

Croker, 16, who was restricted in terms of the events within which she was allowed to compete due to her injury, raced in the 90-metre hurdles, 200-metre hurdles and 200-metre sprint events for her age group. She also took part in the long jump event.

She achieved great success on the day, winning two gold medals in the 90-metre hurdles and long jump events and a silver medal in the 200-metre hurdles. Croker also placed sixth overall in the 200-metre sprint.

The Tenison Woods College student is a member of the school’s High Performance Sports Program, aimed at supporting and developing highly talented athletes, which is headed by former semi-professional footballer and current teacher Nathan Fleetwood.

The course, developed in accordance with the Australian Curriculum, combines the study requirements of daily academics with the training and development of student’s practical talents as appropriate for Year 8 and 9 high-performing student athletes.

Alongside this is education on off-field related topics, including sport psychology, nutrition, data analytics, weight training and recovery methods.
