A Millicent police tradition dating back four decades has continued in 2024.
Back in the 1980s, a number of officers were aligned with the Millicent Football Club as either players or in support roles.
They decided to fund an annual trophy for a promising underage Saints footballer.
Although this original coterie of police has long moved on, the annual trophy has continued.
The 2024 recipient was Liam Camwood and the presentation was made at the recent trophy afternoon at McLaughlin Park
His football career had begun in 2019 with a season with the Tantanoola Junior Colts.
All Liam’s subsequent football has been
played in the various underage grades with Millicent.
He also had a taste of senior football this season with one Reserves game against North Gambier on May 11.
Officer in charge of Millicent police Senior Sergeant First Class Rick Errington APM is pleased the tradition continues.
“Each year, the staff at Millicent police station proudly recognise a local football player who demonstrates sound leadership, courage and respectful behaviour amongst the playing group and club,” Sgt Errington said.
“These are core values of all SAPOL employees.
“This year we wish to recognise Liam for his outstanding contribution to the Millicent Football Netball Club and the community.”
Among the notable Millicent footballing police have been late West Adelaide and state ruckman Tom Prowse who coached the club in the post-war years when they were still known as the Magpies.
Among the others have been Eugene Warrior Senior, Rick Grimes, John Frick, Matt Bryant, Darren McKenzie and Paul Ashworth.
