Young guns claim Vic cup

Two young local cricketers have taken home glory after being crowned the champions of the Cricket Victoria Country Cup in Kiewa.

Mil Lel’s Harry Hicks and Mil Lel/Kongorong’s Ryan Lucas, with the coaching help of Mil Lel’s Craig Hicks, took home the U16 Victorian Country championship after defeating Gippsland in the grand final.

The team had a great carnival, only dropping one game which happened in the final round and just so happened to be against Gippsland, who they again faced in the grand final.

The side played well in the final, making 171 runs in the first innings then defending their run total well as they held Gippsland to only 146 runs.

Hicks was named man of the match after an impressive bowling performance, finishing with 4/23 while Lucas also did well with the ball, ending 2/32.

Harry’s father and the team’s bowling coach Craig Hicks thought the side played very well across the carnival.

“They were unbelievable, it was pretty tough going because were all from Mount Gambier, Warrnambool, Horsham area we had to travel up to Aubrey, so we all went up there on a bus and stayed in a school dorm room so we had it pretty hard going,” he said.

“We did have a gun team and they were awesome, they played cricket really well and got along really well which is obviously a huge part of it.

“They probably had a few tight games and they won all of them so I was pretty happy with it.”

Hicks said winning the grand final was a wonderful experience to have with the team and particularly with his son.

“It was awesome and it was not just with Harry because we have won a couple of country cups in South Australia with me as coach and him playing,” he said.

“But to do it in Victoria was amazing, the whole group we had a lot of trainings and a lot of time together and we lived together for the whole week so I got to know all the boys really well and it was just absolutely magnificent.”
