Weekend to forget for bayside bowls

It was a weekend to forget for the Port MacDonnell Bowls Club with only one pennant team success across the three days of play.

That team was the Port MacDonnell Red side in the midweek competition.

The Bay side won its round 4 contest against Mount Gambier Red by 14 shots after a tight battle.

Lance Fisher, Terry Seiler, Keith Dowdell and Heather Richards won their rink 34-19.

The result paved the way to success despite Des Horrigan, Jan Dowdell , Kevin Henderson and Robert Hutchesson losing by a single shot.

Port MacDonnell Blue could not keep up the success during an evenly fought battle with Naracoorte.

Ben Tilley, Lorraine, Mackereth, Danny Gaut and Jennie Tilley fell a single shot short of victory on their rink, while a 25-18 defeat for Michael Glynn, Chris Negline, Barrie Schmidt and Carol Schmidt sealed the Bay’s fate.

The Division 1 Friday Ladies Pennants battle between Port MacDonnell and Millicent Red went down to the wire.

Jennie Tilley, Roma Henderson, Carol Schmidt and Heather Richards got the Bay off to a great start winning their rink 29-21.

However, a 34-25 loss by Lyn Vanderley, Sharron Perryman, Jan Dowdell and Judith Grosvenor was enough to turn the tables and hand Millicent Red overall honours by one shot.

In Division 2 Penola outclassed Port MacDonnell by 34 shots.

On Saturday Port MacDonnell’s Open Pennant team went down to Mount Gambier Red in a high-scoring battle.

Paul Weir, Robert Hutcchesson, Wayne Dowdell and Tim Wrightson won 20-15.

But Barrie Schmidt’s and Lance Fisher’s defeats gave Mount Gambier the ascendancy.

Port MacDonnell’s Division 3 outfit travelled to Mount Gambier RSL and lost by 40 shots.

John Naismith, Jan Dowdell, Kevin Osman and Kevin Henderson were the standouts winning their rink 26-19.

Division 4 could not defend its home turf at the Bay against Mount Gambier RSL.

All three rinks led by Graham Lucas, Ben Tilley and Michael Glynn went down in the 40-shot defeat.

Tuesday social bowls were played in perfect weather with mixed pairs and triples on the agenda.

The 3-2 game winners were Kel Butler (50 points) Paul Weir (52) Bryan Feast, Jimmy Williams and Robert Hutchesson (54).

The sponsor for the day was Chris Negline.

Port MacDonnell will hold it’s annual two day men’s fours on this weekend with teams coming from Adelaide, Riverland and the lower and Upper South East, while COVID-19 locked out all Victorian teams from participating.
