Foreshore contract endorsed

Foreshore contract endorsed

The next stage of the multi-million-dollar revitalisation of the Portland Foreshore has reached a new milestone, following the endorsement of a key works contract.

Glenelg Shire councillors have awarded the contract for the second and final stage of the Portland Foreshore Connecting Paths to local contractor GR Carr.

The project will extend the current connecting pathways from the youth activity and skate space, which was completed earlier this year, right through to the Maritime Discovery Centre, with boardwalks at the Portland Maritime Discovery Centre and town jetty.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Anita Rank said it was the “next piece of the foreshore puzzle”.

“It is a fantastic to see another aspect of the Portland Foreshore redevelopment going to contract and better yet, to trusted local contractors,” she said.

“Earlier this year we completed stage one works of this important project, which saw the creation of connecting pathways from the youth activity and skate space to the beach and all abilities play space and an extension to the car park.

“This next stage will connect these existing pathways right through to the opposite end of the foreshore, connecting all open space and facilities. There may also be the opportunity to formalise the existing gravel paths from the Maritime Discovery Centre to the Lee Breakwater.

“This is an exciting milestone which will see us edge closer to our goal of a fully integrated and accessible foreshore precinct for all to utilise and enjoy. It will also cement Portland’s status as a regional tourism destination of choice.

“We look forward to works starting in 2022 and putting together the final pieces of the foreshore puzzle.”

The Portland Foreshore Connecting Paths project is funded through the Victorian Government’s Building Works Program and the Glenelg Shire Council.
