Police targeted Mount Gambier drivers on the weekend as part of a special operation focussed on hoon driving.
A total of 33 expiation notices and 41 defect notices were issued as part of the operation.
Limestone Coast Local Service Area Operations Manager Inspector Karmen Conway said there were several arrests over the weekend, where officers also targeted dangerous road use.
Highway patrols, Traffic Services Branch and local Limestone Coast Police were deployed throughout Mount Gambier on Friday and Saturday to detect hoon driving.
One driver was arrested for extreme speed after being detected in Mount Gambier on Saturday night.
He was just one of three arrests over the weekend.
Just before 10.30pm his vehicle was detected travelling in excess of 160kph in a 110kph zone on the Princes Highway.
The vehicle’s tyres were spiked and the driver and passenger ran from the car in Ramsay Avenue.
Patrols searched the area and quickly arrested the alleged driver, a 26-year-old man, and his passenger, a 24-year-old man, both from Mount Gambier.
The driver was charged with aggravated extreme speed and driving in a manner dangerous to evade police and was refused police bail to appear in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court.
He also tested positive to methamphetamine and the sample was sent for forensic testing.
The passenger was charged with hinder police and also bailed to appear in court.
During the operation a total of three people were arrested and five people reported for traffic offences.
Five drivers were caught drink driving and eight motorists tested positive to drugs.
Three people were caught driving unlicensed or disqualified and police issued three instant licence disqualifications.
Five vehicles were impounded.
Inspector Conway said she was disappointed with the motorists’ behaviour.
“It is disappointing the vast majority of the drivers caught allegedly breaking the law are Mount Gambier residents,” she said.
“These are people in our community who through their actions create unsafe roads – putting you at risk when you are driving according to the road rules.
“We encourage the community to report irresponsible driving and assist your local police in making our roads safe for all to use.”
