Hear ye, hear ye – medieval fair brings bygone era to life in city

Enter the gates of the Mount Gambier Showgrounds on April 23 and 24 and you’ll hear the sounds of swords clashing, crowds cheering and pipes playing at the inaugural Fantasy Medieval Fair.

Re-enactment groups from around the country will have their camps on display immersing you in medieval culture, ranging from Roman soldiers, knights in armour and Viking villages.

Whether it’s feasting, fighting or forging iron, there will be plenty for everyone to see and do.

Try out longbow archery, have your photo taken in a fantasy setting, try on some armour, have your hair or beard braided, pet some highland cattle, watch a traditional Punch and Judy puppet show, try out a game of dungeons and dragons, and more.

There will also be a massive medieval marketplace with stalls from local suppliers as well as from around the country, offering wares that fit into the fantasy or medieval theme.

Goods on offer will include jewellery, cloaks, handmade and bespoke items, costumes, leatherworks, runes and readings, dolls, gaming supplies, hobby supplies, custom teas and tankards.

The SA Scorpions will be hosting a combat arena featuring 20 fully armoured professional fighters engaging in battles each day, and the Confession Combat Arena will host a variety of combat styles including Roman and Viking battles from SA and Victoria.

The Thistle Meadery Tavern will be available with a range of SA bar stalls including traditional mead and ale, and a full food court area will feature food trucks with medieval influenced foods as well as street food and vegan options.
