Publishing past preserved

The Millicent Public Library has recently taken delivery of some remarkable items of local publishing history.

Once restored, a timber office desk and matching swivel chair will be put on display in the Bruce Towers History Room.

They have been donated by the family of the late Bob Chewings who had used them in his unique work for decades.

Immediately after World War II, the young journalist had joined the staff of the Millicent newspaper.

Upon the retirement of owner/editor Reuben Mowbray in 1952, The South Eastern Times was purchased from him on favourable terms by Mr Chewings and four of his workmates.

Mr Chewings took over as editor and remained in the role until his retirement in 1988.

During his time as a co-owner, The South Eastern Times moved in 1964 from George Street to purpose-built premises in Davenport Street.

Along with wife Joan, Mr Chewings was a generous benefactor of the Millicent Public Library and donated new furniture when the current building was erected 30 years ago.
