The Millicent Men’s Shed has accepted $25,000 in Federal Government grant funding to expand the Fifth Street building to include a metal workshop.
Millicent Men’s Shed secretary and Millicent RSL sub-branch president Chris Mathias said the Millicent Men’s Shed drew up a formal partnership with the RSL Millicent Sub-branch last year, to provide an outlet for welfare support for military veterans in the region.
“Currently, 32% of the Men’s Shed’s members are veterans, a number of whom have been referred to the Shed by the RSL committee,” Mr Mathias said.
“This relationship has been of great value in providing a facility which welcomes veterans and offers them companionship and some purpose in life through the undertakings of the shed.
“To provide more activities for all its members, the Shed is expanding to encompass a metal workshop, to complement the current woodwork workshop.
“The recognition by DVA and Tony Pasin of the importance of the RSL/Men’s Shed partnership is demonstrated by the offer of this grant.
“Both the Shed and the RSL sub-branch are very appreciative of the support and look forward to expanding the services they can provide to veterans and other men in the community.”
Member for Barker Tony Pasin congratulated the Millicent Men’s Shed for the successful application to the Federal Government’s Veteran and Community Program.
“The dedication and hard work of organisations such as the Millicent Men’s Shed who are partnered with the Millicent RSL Sub Branch, ensure veterans and their families receive essential services, support and opportunities allowing them to continue active roles in their local communities,” he said.
