Mount Gambier’s local community radio station 5GTR has won multiple awards at the South Australian Community Broadcasters Association (SACBA) Bilby Awards.
The station was awarded for best coverage of a sporting event, best interview and was runner up in the best station production category.
The first-place awards were presented for the station’s Limestone Coast Country Sports show which airs every Sunday from 10am – 12pm and is sponsored by Mount Gambier business MT Wheels.
The award-winning program was produced in-part by 5GTR presenters Graham Gill and Andrew Doman and 5GTR station manager Annette Smith.
Ms Smith and 5GTR-FM presenter Brad Williams represented the radio station at the annual conference which took place at the Lakes Resort Hotel in Adelaide.
The event included workshops, a celebration of 50 years of Community Radio in Australia, a three-course meal and the decorated Bilby Awards.
Ms Smith said the awards were only possible due to the community’s involvement in their programs and the support from local sporting organisations.
“It’s our job to give the sports that do not usually get the recognition they deserve, such as disc golf and athletics, a platform to be heard,” she said.
“They are not just awards for our sports show, they demonstrate that 5GTR is award-winning which we have not been able to say for quite some time.
“It is so rewarding to have your station name called out amongst 32 other community radio stations in South Australia.
“It is an absolute thrill and a privilege to represent 5GTR FM.”
