‘Miracle’ final wicket stand halts South Gambier bowling frenzy

Under 12 – West v Glencoe

Glencoe started their innings with a flying start, taking the opening bowlers for 25 runs with the bat off the first four overs.

This made the West boys work even harder with the ball.

The opening duo retired on 30 and 11 respectively, after both batters watched the ball carefully and picked the right ones to hit, giving them the winning runs.

This brought T. Bellinger to the crease with Harley Dale.

Unfortunately Bellinger fell to the bowling of Jarrah Durbrige in his second over bowled.

Popping the ball in the air gave Jarrah the chance to take his first caught and bowled for the season.

This brought Mason Crowe to the crease as Dale retired on 20 bringing Jasmine Hass to the crease.

It was not long before Durbrige struck again with his second caught and bowled for the season dismissing Crowe for 0.

The dismissal brought Hunter Crowe to the crease.

Both Hass and Crowe slowed the wicket taking down both retiring Hass on 2 and Crowe on 7.

It did not take the boys long before they struck again with the ball with Jack Davison and Maximis Prantsidis taking one wicket each, both bowled, finishing the game leaving Glencoe with the total of 4/122.

Well played by Glencoe getting the win and a great start from a young West team.

Under 14 – Mount Burr v Penola/Naracoorte

The players were met with overcast skies and a cool breeze out at Mount Burr oval on Saturday.

The Mount Burr team had the task of chasing down a healthy 145 runs set by Penola/Naracoorte.

The opening pair of Harry Baker 30 not out and Naga Wright 11 saw the Burr off to a great start before BernieWatson took a very sharp chance to dismiss Wright who was looking in great form.

Baker showed maturity beyond his years to reach retirement.

A few more quick wickets fell from some tight bowling by Bryce Caitlin 2/9, but this brought big hitting Deklan Brant to the crease, who scored quickly with 37 off 28 balls before being dismissed by a brilliant one handed running catch on the boundary by star fielder Watson.

Some more wickets fell with some great bowling from Jack Pilkington 3/6 and this had the game in the balance.

An important 9th wicket partnership by Patrick ‘Patman’ Freebairn nine not out and Zephyr Wright saw the home team settle and the winning runs were hit in the 34th over.

In a closely contested match played in great spirit by both teams, Mount Burr finished up with a score of 10/163 to clinch their first win of the season.

Under 17 – South Gambier v Mil Lel

From the first over South had the foot on the throat right with Elwood Geary and Sam Domaschenz taking a combined of three wickets within the first 5 overs.

South was on a wicket taking frenzy with an excellent bowling performance from young Scott McBain with figures of 3/3 off his 3 overs.

This eventually saw Mil Lel at 8 for 17 until a miracle of a batting partnership between Nick Bald and Lochlan Dolphin took Mil Lel up to 71 runs, but they could not quite get over the line with South finishing on top.
