Former Mount Gambier cricketer and current Federal MP Tony Pasin continued his winning record when he led his unique team on to an oval in Canberra recently.
Mr Pasin has been the Liberal Member for Barker for the past decade and captains the parliamentary team in their annual matches with the Press Gallery.
Despite former first-class cricketer Joe Dawes claiming a hattrick for the Press Gallery, the MPs won by three wickets.
Back in the day, Mr Pasin was a handy batsman for Yahl and South Gambier in the Mount Gambier association while also performing well in suburban competitions when he was studying and working in the capital city.
Arguably the player with the highest profile in his team was one-time Nationals leader and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack.
Ironically, he was a country journalist and newspaper editor prior to entering parliament.
“We have all parties represented in the Parliamentary cricket team,” Mr Pasin said.
“The only exception is The Greens.
“The Press Gallery have English-born Andrew Probyn, of the ABC, as their captain.
“Another well-known face is Adelaide’s Phil Coory who works in print and the electronic media.”
Owing to COVID, Mr Pasin said the usual schedule of games was disrupted.
“We also played the Press Gallery in November and we won,” he said.
“Our latest game was on a turf wicket at Chisholm.”
