Junior cricketers pad up for big clashes as shield finals action arrives

Under 12 Sims Shield – Penola v South Gambier
Penola and South Gambier travelled to Reidy Park on Thursday for the first day’s play of their semi final clash in the MGDCA Sims Shield.

South Gambier won the toss and elected to bat as Penola’s opening bowlers osh and Jim Manninen restricted scoring and Josh claimed the first wicket of Clayfield for five, bringing Howard to the crease.

Howard scored an unbeaten game high of 35 with good partnerships with Salmon, only broken by a direct hit runout by Josh Manninen and a 36 run partnership with Sims, who was bowled by Kidman for a well-made 10.

Tucker claimed two wickets for Penola and had South Gambier at 7/83 after 20 overs.

The final three batsmen in Bouchier, Ellis and Finnigan put up solid resistance and took South Gambier’s total to 101. he teams returned on Friday afternoon for Penola’s innings in milder conditions.

South Gambier’s opening bowling pair of Sigley and Sims bowled well and restricted scoring early. Will Harris and Josh Manninen batted well and remained unbeaten with Will on 10 and Josh on 13.

Jim Manninen was next in and looked threatening, hitting two boundaries in his 12 off 12 balls before being run out by Howard.

Penola’s final three batters in Tucker, Raidis and Kain battled hard, with Raidis and Kain handling the pressure to get a single off the final ball to force a draw.

Due to Penola finishing higher on the ladder it gets the opportunity to meet Millicent in the grand final this week.

Under 12 Sims Shield – Millicent v Mount Burr
Oakley Nicholls won the toss and elected to bat first, with Raff Lawlor and Pacey Duldig making a good start seeing off Mount Burr’s opening bowlers Kobe and Charlie Bromley.

Both opening batters retired on 25 runs, bringing about a mini collapse with the first two wickets both falling with the score on 35.

Kobe Bromley came back on with two wickets in his second over.

Levi Robbins came to the crease and steadied the ship, retiring on 13 off his 30 balls and Arlie Sims chipped in with 11.

Levi Robbins and Raff Lawlor came back in after the sixth wicket and put on a match-winning partnership of 64 runs, dominated by Lawlor who brought up his 50. After the allotted 30 overs Millicent ended up with a competitive score of 6/153, Lawlor 57 not out, Robbins 26 not out, Duldig 25 not out.

The following night in much cooler conditions, Mount Burr’s opening batters got through the new ball, both retiring.

Scoring was hard to come by though with Duldig bowling his four overs, all being maidens.

Arlie Sims got the first wicket off Lydeamore for a first-ball duck and started a steady stream of wickets with Mount Burr 2/29 at drinks after 15 overs.

As if Lawlor’s game could not get any better after wicket keeping well for the first 15 overs, he took the ball in the 17th over and ended up with figures of 4/7 off three overs. He missed out on his hat trick in his third over.

Mount Burr was bowled out in the 23rd over for 53.

Under 14 Mixed Juniors – West Gambier v Mil Lel
On day one West Gambier won the toss and chose to send Mil Lel in to bat.

Opening batters were Georgia Barrett and Kade Mulraney, with Barrett facing the majority of balls in the first few overs.

Then came a mix up with running, which saw West take its first wicket of Mulraney (run out) in the third over.

West’s two opening bowlers Tom Richards and Naite Fox produced outstanding bowling to the opening batters at four overs and two maidens a piece, and Richards bowling out Rhys Grigg in over five.

Tayte Virtanen batted strongly with Barrett for five overs, until Barrett was caught by Jaxon Hewlett in slips.

Harry Hicks and Virtanen also had a strong partnership of 36 runs in eight overs.

Hicks eventually departed on 29 after he was caught by Kallan Price.

Ryan Lucas was classy with the bat scoring 64 retired not out, after facing 45 balls.

He batted out 16 overs and had six of his team mates come and go during his time at the crease.

Virtanen was able to come back in at the 36th over to add runs to his tally ending the game on 27 not out.

West had Mil Lel all out in over 38.

On day two Mil Lel came out firing, taking the wicket of Jaxon Hewlett first ball of the game.

Connor Tweddle and Tom Richards steadied the game with a 13 over partnership for 26 runs, before losing Tweddle lbw.

Kahne Jeffrey came to the crease before being dismissed by Kade Mulraney with his quick hands, stumping Jeffrey.

Kallan Price looked good with the bat, hitting a couple of fours, top scoring on 12 runs and the team on 47, before he was bowled by Tyler Fiegert.

West’s batting order then fell quickly, with Mil Lel taking the wickets of Ethan Brook, Anush Das, Bailey Noble and Naite Fox all within three overs.

Lachy Moss held his own against the Mil Lel bowlers, staying out at the crease for 30 balls, but ended up bowled out and game over in the 29th over.

Under 17 O’Donoghue Shield – East Gambier v South Gambier
It was a slow but solid start for South from openers Noah Maxwell and James Miller with some tight bowling and fielding from East, with the first wicket falling with the score at six.

This brought in Jed Sims who saw the score through to 41 before retiring. A steady fall of wickets was offset by Jaggar Geary with a solid 24.

This saw the return of Sims who was able to finish the innings with a flurry of boundaries to get the score to 134 from 40 overs on his way to 51 not out.

With 40 overs to bat East looked set to run down South’s score of 134, however an explosive first over from Elwood Geary had East reeling at 2/4 at the end of the first over.

Luke Richards and Riley Lawrence consolidated to get the score to 18 before a mid-pitch mix up saw Richards run out for seven and East at 3/18.

East steadied the ship with solid knocks from Jack Lawrence and Will Graetz (33) that took the score through to 7/94.

The tail wagged slightly with a solid 12 not out from Evan Clark before South finished the game off dismissing East for 110.

Under 17 O’Donoghue Shield – Millicent v Mil Lel

Millicent played Mil Lel at Frew Park in the semi final with a chance for the winner to advance to the finale.

Millicent won the toss and elected to bat first on Wednesday night. It was a cautious start for the opening pair due to tidy bowling from Mil Lel.

Toby Grigg picked up the first wicket of the game, getting out Campbell Hateley for 8.

There was some big hitting from Ashton Linder 21, Kallen Beven 30 and Sam Hunt 53 not out putting Millicent in a strong position.

Jett Werchon 14 , Jackson Dean 21 and Osker Howell 33 took Millicent to an excellent score of 9 for 228 off 40 overs.

On the second day Mil Lel lost its first wicket in the first over from the bowling of Kallen Beven.

Brodie Pftizner (9) and Noah Virtanen (10) steadied things but from then Mil Lel lost wickets regularly and it was only a lower order partnership from Nic Bald 21 and Lochie Dolphin 37 helping to get Mil Lel to all out for 94.

This handed Millicent a strong 134 run victory .
