Warm weather shakes up women’s footy round

KYBYBOLITE V KONGORONG

After a shake-up due to warm weather, it was a bitumen burning road trip for three teams in round 5 of the Limestone Coast Women’s Football League, while Kybybolite stayed home and played host.

In an early start the host team Kybybolite came up against Kongorong in what should have been a closer match than the score reflected, but the Tigers made a meal of the Hawks.

It all started from the opening bounce for the home side, being able to run free and carry the ball to attack the goal line which enabled the players to slot three majors to the Hawks solitary point.

Kongorong was coming off a three-peat of wins and would have thought it was in with a chance to take the fight up to the Tigers, but Kybybolite had other ideas with solid ball movement and running the opposition around the field.

At the quarter time siren Kyby had a good lead of 20 points.

The second term did not get any better for the Hawks, with Kyby’s attack ruthless at the ball, not allowing Kongorong any free movement.

It was a four-goal term for Kyby which remained in total control and again not allowing the Hawks any possession.

While the Hawks battled hard at the contest, they had no answer to the arduous work from Kyby, heading into the main break with a 47-point deficit.

Kybybolite came out firing in the third term and showed why it is a threat to go back-to-back in 2023 with a seven-goal domination, but the Hawks managed to get one goal themselves to put some respectability on the scoreboard despite heading into the final change with an 83-point margin.

With the game firmly in the hands of the Tigers, the Hawks were able to hold Kybybolite to the one goal for the term while managing to kick one of their own.

In the end Kybybolite ran away winners and boosted its percentage with a comfortable 86-point victory.

Better players for the Tigers were Dellie Brown, Jamie Wachtel, Emily Cattuzzo, Genevieve Blake and Tahlia Kavanagh and for Kongorong Jade Longbottom, Riley Buckingham, Sheba Miller, Sophie Longbottom and Zara Dirk stood up.

MILLICENT V KALANGADOO

In the next game it was Millicent playing Kalangadoo and both these sides are battling this season trying to build something for the future.

The game was played in true footy spirit and a good, tough game of football was on show with both teams trying to get the win and open their season account.

The Saints got off to a flying start in the first term kicking three goals to the Magpies one, but Millicent could have had a bigger lead had it kicked straight, entering the first break with a 15-point buffer in hand.

The second quarter was again a tough and scrappy game of football from both sides not being able to get a clear passage of play going, but all players were working hard to get the ball forward.

The Saints found the goals twice in the term while holding the Magpies goalless to extend the lead to 27 at main break.

It was a different game in the third term with Millicent taking its foot off the pedal and allowing Kalangadoo to get the ball and score easily in what would have been the side’s best quarter of football so far this season.

The Magpies outscored the Saints two goals to one and showed some outstanding determination to make the Saints think hard about their next moves.

After the final break both sides came out hard in a tough contest, with every player holding their opposition accountable at each contest and not allowing free play across the ground.

Both teams kicked one goal each, but the inaccurate Saints could have blown out the lead massively at the final siren, only managing to find minor scores on many occasions.

In the end Millicent opened the year’s account with a 22-point win and Kalangadoo would have taken some positives from the way the side played.

The best players for the Saints were Kelsie Wilkinson, Megan Tilby, Michelle Robinson, Lauren Potter and Alannah Pratt and for the Magpies it was Natalia Edwards, Georgie Gentile, Kristina Simmonds, Jade Brennan and Elodie Burr.
