The grand finalists have been decided for the Limestone Coast Women’s Football League, after four teams battled it out on Sunday for the last two spots.
Kongorong defeated South Gambier in the first match in the preliminary finals to secure their spot in the decider.
The game was to be played at the Kalangadoo Football Club, but due to unforeseen circumstances had to be moved to Vansittart Park at the last minute.
The first quarter started with South Gambier making the early move with six points, while Kongorong struggled to find their footing.
However, the Hawks’ Evie Sealey and Riley Buckingham soon stepped up their game, and with the help of Jade Longbottom, Zara Dirk, Taylor Cozzi, and Sheree Ailey, they managed to take control of the game.
By the time the siren blew to mark half time, Kongorong had levelled the score at 13 points each.
The “premiership quarter” was a close contest, but ultimately proved disappointing for South, which only a single point for the term as Kongorong added three to their tally.
Kongorong headed into the final term with a comfortable lead of 33 to 14 points.
From there it was all one way traffic as Kongorong kicked away from the Demons, adding three more goals to their total with South only able to kick one major.
Sealey continued her excellent performance, scoring four goals in total, while Longbottom and Dirk added to the tally.
South Gambier’s Jarrah Altschwager and Leonie Robertson tried to keep their team in the game, but it was not enough.
At the final siren, Kongorong had a comfortable win beating South Gambier 51 to 20, booking their spot in the grand final.
Kongorong’s Cozzi scored three goals, while South Gambier’s Sophie Wight and Emily Pridham managed to get on the scoreboard as well.
The best players for Kongorong on the day were Sealey, Riley Buckingham, Longbottom, Dirk, Cozzi and Ailey, while Wight, Pridham, Altschwager, Robertson and Chloe Lines were the best players for South Gambier.
Overall, it was an excellent performance by Kongorong, which moves on to the final match of the Limestone Coast Women’s Football League.
South Gambier has been left to reflect on what may have been, once again falling desperately short of the holy grail, having lost to Kybybolite in the grand final last season.
Casterton Sandford v North Gambier In an exciting game of women’s football, Casterton Sandford faced off against North Gambier in the second preliminary final.
The game was moved to Vansittart Park late giving North Gambier the home ground advantage.
The game started with Casterton Sandford taking an early lead, scoring 12 points in the first quarter, while North Gambier managed nine.
However, North Gambier managed to catch up in the second period, with the Tigers booting two goals to the Cats’ one.
Casterton Sandford continued to fight to hold the lead in the third period, but North was too good going into the final quarter with a lead of 13 points.
The final period was a thrilling, with Casterton Sandford putting in all their effort to try and catch up.
In a hard fought final quarter both teams failed to find a score between the big sticks with North only kicking three points and Casterton Sandford failing to register a score.
North Gambier managed to score three goals and six behinds, bringing their final score to 39 points, claiming a 16 point victory.
The best players for Casterton Sandford were Amelia Thomas, Zhane Crawford, Hinemoa Biddle-Maitland, Scarlett Jarrad, Makayla Hutchins, and Libby Altorfer.
For North Gambier, the best players were Libby Howe-Morgan, Alice Tentye, Penny Coleman, Grace Altschwager, Mikaila Pitt, and Luca Roulstone.
The Cats’ Zhane Crawford and Makayla Hutchins scored one goal each, while Gabrielle Sullivan booted two.
Alice Tentye scored an impressive four majors for North, while Libby Howe-Morgan, Mikaila Pitt and Luca Roulstone each scored one.
