Artist collaborative group The Tree of Us + 1 opened a bright textile exhibition Through our Eyes at Mount Gambier’s Little Blue Wren on Sunday.

The exhibition Through our Eyes features art quilts by artists, Suzanne Gummow, Jenny Bates, Maxine Fry and Kerrie Head.

The individual quilts are wonderful art pieces and come together to form a larger piece of artistic beauty.

“We liked the idea of our separate works together forming a larger work,” Ms Head said.

“We challenged ourselves to work in a quirky, naïve style, using bright colours, with the water, land and sky flowing from one piece to another, and swapping some fabrics for us all to incorporate in each piece.

“The smaller pieces allow us to explore motifs from the larger piece in a different way,.”

During the production of the exhibition, one member of the group moved to the country, and then COVID-19 threw out a logistical challenge.

The group had to learn to share their work across social media and via Zoom meetings.

The encouragement and support of group members fed their determination to carry on.

“Individual quilts depict versions of loved landscapes, and in the time of restricted travel, remind us of places we found interesting, beautiful, or connected with – all interpreted ‘through our eyes,” Ms Head said.

The exhibition will be open to the public until July 23.
