Millicent-based schoolteacher Dave Green landed his first winner as an owner when Paw Some Shade was successful in last Thursday’s Todd’s Photographics Maiden Stake (305 metres) at Tara Raceway.
Raced in partnership with the breeder Jason Newman and trained by his partner Melissa Freitag at Moorak, Paw Some Shade quickly found the front before running out a two length win over Kevin’s Lane in 18.32 seconds.
Green handles dogs at most of the Sunday meetings and is the father of young girls Kaia and Hadlie, both of whom have their names attached to a “Cadillac” greyhound, courtesy of Cadillac Racing’s Kerry Hawker of Edenhope.
By Blue Moon Rising, Paw Some Shade is out of Dyna Zapto, a winner of five races on Victorian provincial tracks.
And there is plenty of winning form around the dam line with litter brother Dyna Chancer winning 31 races and $295,000 in prize money.
Speaking after the litter’s first win, Newman said Green had picked out the October 2021 white and brindle bitch when she was a pup.
“I offered Dave a half-share in one of the pups in return for the all the help he gives us on race days.
“As such, it was really pleasing to see her win for both of us,” he said.
Meanwhile, Langhorne Creek trainer Tony Hinrichsen kicked off another good day at Tara Raceway when Correlate took up the running down the back before finishing strongly for a 4¼ length win in the Commercial Hotel TG5+W Stake (400 m) over Striking Holly in 23.44 seconds.
The win was the first for the daughter of Aston Dee Bee x Speculate since January when she defeated kennelmate Filthy Phantom who holds the Australian record for the most number of race starts – 345.
And Hinrichsen looks to hold a strong hand in Thursday’s Fast Forward final following the running of the second of two heats, the Hyland Fox TG1-4W Stake (512 m).
With the eight fastest heat runners advancing to the final, irrespective of finishing positions, only the Dean Fennell trained Saint Ollie made it through from the first heat when winning in 30.36 seconds.
Hinrichsen’s On The Northerns defeated Sir Patrick by a nostril in 30.23 seconds while Survive The Fury, Phantom Fury, Bungaloo Darcy, Bulsara and Down Under Miss all ran quicker than the remainder of the first heat.
Down Under Miss actually did a good job to make the final given her start.
She finished three-quarters of a length behind the second-last dog in 30.63 seconds which was the same time as Saint Milly’s second placing in the first heat.
So a couple of extra decimal points were required with the photo finish operator coming up with Down Under Miss at 30.6262 and Saint Milly 30.6288.
This means Hinrichsen now has half the final field – On The Northerns, Survive The Fury, Phantom Fury and Down Under Miss.
Earlier in the day another Koroit trainer in Lindsay Brookes was successful in the Gambier Vets Maiden Stake (400 m) with Lucky Me who scored a first-up win in what turned out to be an action-packed race.
The win actually came about following an association with keen greyhound man Geoff Slattery of the Slattery Media Group.
“It’s probably six or seven years ago that I picked up three pups from Geoff.
“By Dyna Tron out of Au Revoir, a couple of them later won at Mount Gambier and Ballarat,” Brookes said.
“Some time later, Geoff made contact to see whether I would be interested in taking another one of the litter for breeding.
“Named Sunningdale, by the time she had retired at the end of 2018 she had won eight races on Victorian provincial tracks.
“I guess what swung the deal for me was that he also owned the stud dog Tommy Brislane and was prepared to throw in a free service as well.”
By Irish sire Premier Fantasy out of Mary Virginia, the lightly-raced Tommy Brislane won 15 races and collected $175,000 in prize money.
He is now standing at stud in Ireland.
Brookes ended up with five from the litter which was whelped in March 2021.
Following Lucky Me’s win last Thursday, Family Friend made her debut on Sunday in the Produce Store Maiden Stake (400 m).
Away well from box five, the fawn dog was always on the pace before finishing third behind the Nicole Stanley-Nifty Lenehan litter sisters Over Opal and Over Olive in 23.64 seconds.
