The Mount Gambier Golf Club hosted golf at its best on Thursday for 94 players, with the sun shining, no wind and good scoring reflected in the ball rundown raised to 38 points.
The winning score came from Tony Klug (36) with 43 points.
One of life’s gentlemen, the always smiling Klug used his handicap to perfection with a 21/22 split, scoring 2 and 3 pointers and the cherry on the top was a 4 point par on the 6th.
Runner up was David McPherson (14) with 42 points.
McPherson, a “past” chairman of course who can take a lot of credit for the course enhancements the last few years, had a 20/22 split highlighted by an 8th birdie and 6 pars and three bogeys for a neat 39 on the back nine.
Next best on a countback also with 42 points was Daryl Taylor who gets another mention this week.
Taylor had 24 on the front nine which included a wipe on the 8th and was even par for the rest.
With 41 points were Rob McIntyre and Ross Bond, on 40 Graham Thomas, Stuart Skirving, Nic Clayton and Peter Buckingham.
On 39 points were John Shirley, Barry Brook and you cannot have one without the other, Shane Brook, Michael Rees, Graham Greenwood, Brian Ashby and his playing partner Andrew Noble.
Nearest the pin on the 8th was Michael Rees and John Shirley on the 16th both scoring birdies.
In contrast to Thursday, the weather turned ugly with torrential rain and strong winds for the Saturday afternoon players while the morning players fared much better which showed in the results.
Nick Black (6) with 36 points took out A grade and was one of very few afternoon golfers to finish and get a mention.
Black was off to a slow start with only 1 point after the first two holes with a birdie on the 6th steadying the ship somewhat before 19 on the back nine which in the conditions was excellent golf.
Runner up also on 36 points was David Pick (6), who was denied a win on his birthday.
Pick playing in the morning was the opposite with a strong front nine of 19 before tiring, as you do when you hit 50.
Scores were much lower than usual in A grade due to a number of afternoon players not completing their round with Kevin Cook 35 and Mitch Broome 34 next in line.
The score of the day belonged to the effervescent Dave Boyce (15) with 42 points.
Boyce drove the ball well all day and put together a strong run on holes 7 through 12 which were all parred for 17 points.
While happy with the win, Boyce did say “I left a few out there”.
Runner up with 38 was the consistent Damian Smith (12) with a 20/18 split.
With 38 points was youngster Archie Milich and Gary Button, 37 Jeff Hodge, Paul Kenny, Leigh McManus, afternoon and Scott Whicker who “left a real lot out there”.
Graham Thomas (22) was back in the winner’s circle again with 38 points highlighted by pars on the difficult 12th and 13th worth 7.
Bob Dalgarno (19) was runner up with 37 as did Brian Ashby, Peter Emetlis and David Turnbull and on 36 points were Shane Foote, Kym Sykes and Robbie Young.
There were 84 starters and less finishers with the ball rundown to a low 33 points and Bailey Letizia with a birdie took out the 8th nearest the pin and Dave Boyce with an excellent shot the 16th.
On Sunday the Rosedale Funerals Seniors Championship was conducted in weather marginally better than Saturday’s with strong winds prevailing.
A good field of 51 men and 19 ladies were in attendance.
The ladies champion for the fourth time was Faye Mainwaring who set up the win with a solid front nine, highlighted by a NTP birdie on the 8th.
Faye’s name again goes onto the trophy donated in 2007 by life member Isobel Phillips.
Runner up and herself a two-time champion was Helen Gregory.
Shane Brook took out his first men’s seniors championship with Nick Black continuing on from Saturday’s form.
Shane’s three birdies on the back nine were the difference.
The men’s trophy has quite a bit of history and dates back to 1955 when donated by Jim Wilson the club professional way back in the day.
Rosedale Funerals sponsors Bec and Stacy Fiegert were on hand to present trophies to the main event recipients.
Final results were Ladies Stroke Champion Faye Mainwaring 88, runner up Helen Gregory 93 and Rosedale Funerals Best Nett Trophy Liz Clements 72.
Men’s Stroke Champion was Shane Brook 76, runner up Nick Black 77 and Rosedale Funerals Best Nett Trophy Neil Quirk.
