The Mount Gambier Library will host a children’s book launch with local budding artist Olive Cotton, illustrator of ‘The Cat Surprise’ on Thursday.
The launch will be part of the Mount Gambier City Council’’s school holiday program of events.
The Cat Surprise has been written by children’s author and counsellor Joan Koskela, and illustrated by her granddaughter, 11-year-old Olive Cotton.
“One day, Grandma was telling me and the other grandchildren the true story of Gingie the Cat and we loved it so much that we all thought that it would be a great story to share with others,” Olive said.
Eight-year-old Billie desperately wanted her own cat.
She hoped and imagined every day until one day, little Gingie came along.
Olive, who loves being creative, especially drawing and painting, began drawing furiously.
Working closely with her Grandma, The Cat Surprise came to life over a five week project.
“When the book was first published, I could not wait to go to the library and hand over a copy so that other children can borrow, read and enjoy,” Olive said.
“I hope to do some more illustrating if the opportunity arises.
“For now, I am selling my hand painted cards and keyrings at local businesses in Mount Gambier.”
The launch will consist of a book reading and Q&A session from the audience, followed by a craft activity.
Books will be available for sale $30 with Olive happy to sign copies.
Bookings are available by contacting the Mount Gambier Library on 8721 2540 or book online at www.mountgambier.sa.gov.au/library under ‘Programs and Events’
