Swimmer hits shore

Veteran swimming instructor Julie Moran has called time after overseeing many hundreds of youngsters at Beachport over the past 27 summers.

With a background as an experienced classroom teacher, Ms Moran and her family live close to the waters of Rivoli Bay and they are involved with the Beachport Surf Lifesaving Club.

Her husband Shannon Moran is a third-generation professional lobster fisherman.

Ms Moran was a foundation member of the Beachport Community Emergency Response Team for SA Ambulance Service and was the 2017 Kintore Ward Australia Day Citizen of the Year.

“After more than 30 years involved with Vacswim programs and 27 of those as instructor-in-charge at Beachport, I have decided it’s time to step down,” Ms Moran said on the Beachport Vacswim social media page.

“If you know of someone who might be keen to step into the role next year, I’m happy to chat anytime.

“Thank you to the amazing group of instructors, assistants and volunteers that were involved in the Beachport Vacswim program this year.”

The classes at Beachport catered for school children ages from 5-15 years of age.

They provided a great opportunity for novice swimmers to learn about beach safety including currents, rips and other hazards. Older participants also learned CPR and First Aid.

Additional Vacswim staff patrolled the beaches and the water this summer during the program.

Owing to uncertainty about the availability of the swimming lake, no Vacswim classes were held at Millicent this summer.
