Library move mooted

Shared use by the community of the library at Penola High School could come to an end after 40 years of operation.

Wattle Range Council is considering a withdrawal from the arrangement to instead operate a public library within the John Riddoch Centre and adjacent to the Penola Visitor Information Centre.

Council considered a 101-page staff report at its monthly meeting and heard from its libraries manager Janice Nitschke.

She said the council would attract a grant from the Libraries Board of South Australia and a move would be timely as the visitor centre was about to be re-designed.

Ms Nitschke said there would be additional programs and services.

According to Cr John Drew, Penola residents had been getting a “raw deal” and should have better library services.

Cr Dale Price liked the central location rather than on the town outskirts at Penola High School.

Council will udnertake public consultation on the proposal.
