Crossing concerns heard

The safety of children using school road crossings at Suttontown Primary School and Allendale East Area School will be reviewed following the successful lobbying of the State Government by Independent Mount Gambier MP Troy Bell.

Mr Bell called for action in the House of Assembly in June.

He said the State Government had recently allocated around $40m in funding to school crossings and signage across South Australia.

“Can Police Minister Dan Cregan advise if there will be an avenue for schools who have already identified safety issues with their current crossings to put forward a submission to be considered?” Mr Bell said at the time.

“Two principals in my electorate, namely Suttontown Primary School and Allendale East Area School, have raised serious concerns with me regarding the safety of their students and the school’s current inadequate crossing infrastructure.”

In reply, Mr Cregan said he would take the question on notice.

His written reply was published in Hansard last week.

“In the recent state budget, $2.6m was allocated to installing new signage at priority locations near school pedestrian actuated crossings where the new 40kph speed limit will apply,” Minister Cregan said.

“In relation to Suttontown Primary School and Allendale East Area School, the department will review pedestrian safety at these locations in conjunction with the local council.”
