Street Machines ready to shine

The South East Street Machines will be revving up to deliver their 46th Trident Tyre Centre Show ‘n’ Shine this Saturday at Hastings Cunningham Reserve from 9am – 4pm.

While entries are yet to be finalised, it can be confirmed this event is one not to be missed with entry only $5 for adults.

The car show is a static display of performance and special vehicle types, with automobiles judged in different categories and trophies awarded to winners.

Shannon’s Insurance sponsors most of the awards which include people’s choice, longest distance travelled and best original car, while this year Crowies Paints will sponsor the best overall paint job for a chosen bike and car.

South East Street Machines president Jim Coombe said while vehicles often travel from further into South Australia and Western Victoria, most of the cars on show are local.

“There are so many cars in the district here that we hardly ever see, but they bring them out on the Show ‘n’ Shine day,” he said.

“We do not see all the same cars. We do see lots of different cars and this is what surprises us to an extent is where have they come from, because we know they are not all from interstate.

“There are more cars around the district than we actually know of and this brings them out.

“We had quite a big area last year and we are looking like we might even have a bigger one because there has been quite a bit of interest shown.

“I do believe we had more cars last year than we had the year before, so yes it is growing.

“We do not have to make a lot of money because our membership fees and all that sort of thing cover our running costs throughout the year and basically when we run this we probably give about 80% of our money away to charities.”

Mr Coombe said since the South Australian Government’s conditional registration scheme expanded in July 2022, he has seen more people participate in the annual event.

“There are definitely a lot more cars coming out that probably had been sitting in sheds because what you pay for registration for a normal car for one year covers you for about three with the historic registration,” he said.

“The only restriction is you can only drive it 90 days a year, but some people struggle to drive them even one day a year.

“Originally when it started and being on a long weekend, it used to be an indoor event and it was always a two day event but that got to the point where it was cost prohibitive to the club, so we started using Hastings Cunningham Reserve and have not looked back since.

“Most of the time the trophy is not just something you put on the shelf. It is quite often a car detailing package and things like that, something that can actually be used.”

A barbecue and live broadcast will be provided by 5GTR and Joanne’s Espresso Express while the Tantanoola ice cream and donuts van will also be on site.
