The 2024 GEM Mount Gambier Spring Show closed out another successful event with more than 10,000 showgoers streaming through the gates over the two days.
Immediate past president Danielle Tulak said perfect spring sunshine helped attract the large crowd eager to be entertained.
“The weather was absolutely a big factor. I think the people that did come through the gate spent a lot more time at the show,” she said.
There was also talk circulating about the fireworks display that appeared to not have had a “grand finale.”
Mrs Tulak confirmed the spectacle was cut short.
“Unfortunately, the last 60 seconds was lost due to a rack malfunction,” she said.
“Due to the safety features in the fireworks system once there is an issue detected in a rack the whole rack shuts down for public safety.
“This was outside of our control. The pyrotechs gave us a rundown afterwards. We were so disappointed, but public safety is paramount in those sorts of scenarios.”
However, the addition of flames for first time was well received.
“We had flames in it for the first time ever. The pyrotechs said we’re in for a treat because they had added flames. It was really cool,” Mrs Tulak said.
With more than 1400 indoor competition entries, a refreshed entertainment schedule and more trade sites Mrs Tulak said it was testament to the community coming together in tough times.
“We had a lot more trade that past years since COVID. This was probably the best year we have had in terms of trader support,” she said.
This year’s Trade Space winners were selected by show patrons Athol Malseed, Frank Tilley and Trudi Hollis.
The winners were Jim’s Laundry Services (Best New Exhibit), X&O Co (Best Indoor Exhibit), Jolly Bubbles (Best Food and Beverage), Russell Industries (Best Industrial Trade), True North RV (Best Home and Leisure) and Jolly Bubbles (Supreme Exhibitor).
A special thank you was also presented to a long-time volunteer over the show weekend.
Margaret Douglas was recognised for her outstanding volunteering efforts as a steward in the cookery section for the past five decades.
“Margaret has been a life member of our show for many years and she just keeps giving back to the community,” Mrs Tulak said.
Mrs Tulak said she also wanted to give a shout out to major sponsors Gambier Earth Movers and all other sponsors, exhibitors, trades, entertainment and everyone else that supported the show.
“Times are tough for everybody, whether it be businesses or general public, without everyone’s support we cannot pull off an event and be successful,” she said.
“The fact that while everyone is doing it tough, it’s amazing the community is still able to rally together and make a great event. It is testament to the good old Mount Gambier way.”
