The Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association competed in the South Australian Indoor Bias Bowls Regional Tournament for the tenth time and scored back-to-back wins of the Othams Trophy to prove they are the best region in the state.
The Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association travelled to Naracoorte last weekend to compete against teams from the Mid South East Indoor Bowls Association, Metro North & Metro South and collected four Gold medals and two Silver medals.
Each team comprised of 26 players, of which 10 different team disciplines were fielded.
The Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association showed that it could mix it with best once again, winning medals in six of the 10 disciplines, four being gold and two silver.
The first player to win a Gold Medal went to Ladies Singles player Serena Bourn, who happened to win all three games with precision bowling – 25-17 vs Metro North, 26-15 vs Metro South, 26-9 vs MSE.
The men’s Triples team of Simon Attiwill, Garry Burke and Stephen Von Duve had two wins over Metro North and South and a five-shot defeat to MSE, but luck on the last day with other results going into their favour resulting them to take the Gold medal.
The Ladies Fours team of Shirley Gifford, Lorraine Van Den Hoogen, Carmel McQuade and Heather Glynn won the Gold medal with two wins and one draw.
The respective 16-11 and 22-11 wins were against Metro South and MSE, while Metro North and Mount Gambier drew 16 all.
The Men’s Fours team of Kevin Burn, Thomas Butler, Graham Dent and Coehen Keppels also took home the Gold medal.
The team went into the last day with two wins over both metro sides and successfully won their third game against MSE to seal the title.
Travis Bourn and Fiona Pearson paired up for the Mixed Pairs event and both were successful against MSE and Metro North.
But on the Sunday they struggled to match the opposition and lost the game against Metro South.
Jennifer Bowering and Keisha Pearson both played fantastic bowls, but were a little unlucky with the game against Metro North to deny them of the top prize and win the Silver Medal.
The Men’s Singles represented by Tim Radley tried hard in all games to be very competitive to come home with one win.
(24-13 vs Metro South, 13-19 vs MSE, 17-19 vs Metro North) The Men’s Pairs also contributed two points to the Othans Trophy and it was not for the sake of trying as Gary Bowering and Craig Pearson were so close for a medal, but were not able to win their last game on the final end v Metro North.
The Ladies Triples Team of Tanya Burke, Veronica Opie and Emma Freemantle started well to win their first game over MSE and also contribute towards the team trophy but found it a little hard for the rest of the competition.
Janice Knight, Fiona Rochow, Gary Walters & Michael Cameron formed the Mixed Fours team and jelled together to be competitive, but were unlucky to not win a game.
Each region’s points were tallied for the Othams Trophy and the Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association and Metro North finished equal.
However, on count-back Mount Gambier was the overall winner for 2021 and president Stephen Von Duve was very proud when he collected the Othams Trophy.
