The scheduling of three major sporting events in Millicent in the space of a month has delighted one local business operator.
Last weekend’s staging of the Pines Enduro off-road race filled to overflowing the nearby Hillview Caravan Park run by Allan and Gloria Withers.
They achieved record occupancy levels as all 18 cabins and powered sites were occupied along with a sizable number of unpowered sites.
The couple took over the park 26 years ago and have installed and upgraded cabins, improved other park amenities and purchased adjacent land which is also home to a mob of kangaroos.
The Pines Enduro has long been regarded by them as a vital part of their business.
The race was cancelled in 2020 and again last year due to COVID factors.
A significant number of the 60 competitors chose to stay at Hillview as it is near the Pines Enduro course.
Mr Withers said the competitors filled his park with the exception of cabins occupied by two visiting health professionals.
“The Pines Enduro was run over the weekend but we had people turning up on Thursday with many staying for four nights,” Mr Withers said.
“This coming weekend we have the Millicent Golf Club hosting golfers from Blackwood and Loxton.
“This is rotated around the three courses over the March, June and October holiday long weekends.
“We have had Blackwood and Loxton golfers stay with us for the past 25 years.”
Demand for accommodation in Millicent is heavy on another weekend in October when Millicent stages its annual junior basketball tournament.
It attracts underage basketballers from across South Australia and Victoria with matches played on October 22 and 23 at the Peter Seebohm Stadium at McLaughlin Park and other venues.
