Alcohol free zone returns for coastal summer break

A temporary alcohol-free zone is again set to apply in sections of the Beachport township at the peak summer holiday period.

Such an annual restriction has applied at the seaside for almost three decades and is supported by local police, businesses and Wattle Range Council.

The zones are authorised by a statement published in the SA Government Gazette.

The declaration of a dry area in Beachport under the provisions of the Liquor Licensing Act has been sought by the council for a number of years, to coincide with the influx of holidaymakers.

Consumption of alcohol in public will be regulated throughout Robe from December 26 until January 3 and this temporary also ban follows past practice.

Annual applications for temporary dry areas are lodged by councils through the Office of Consumer and Business Services.

The dry areas are said to provide police with enhanced scope to reduce public intoxication and anti-social behaviour.
