All Stars shine in Adelaide

Four Mount Gambier Baseball League members were named in the All Star team at the weekend’s SA Country Baseball Championships in Adelaide, while the Under 14 team was crowned country champions.

Ethan Chuck was named in the Ken Wesselink All Star team in the outfield, Dylan Ridding as an infielder, Dylan Chuck as catcher and Sean Horrigan was named as assistant coach.

Riley Parsons was named the Under 17’s most valuable player for the carnival, while Phoenix Coles was named Under 14’s most valuable player.

Chuck claimed the David Mitchell Batting Average wth .600 along with being named catcher and Ridding was named Mount Gambier’s most valuable player.

The senior team met Darwin in their first match, coming away with a 20-0 win before holding off a determined Gawler outfit 5-3 in game two.

The second day’s matches started well with the Mount Gambier team defeating Riverland 8-0, before drawing with Sunraysia 3-all in the last game of the round.

This put the team in contention for the Kevin Ryan Cup.

Mount Gambier came away with a 7-2 win over Port Pirie to take home the Kevin Ryan cup and progress to the grand final against Sunraysia.

However, despite the tough competition, a classier Sunraysia outfit prevailed to win the game 3-0.

Mount Gambier also fielded Under 14 and Under 17 teams, which played well.

On the first day of play, Riverland defeated Mount Gambier 3-1 before the second match where Mount Gambier recorded a win over Riverland 18-3.

On day two the Under 14’s again defeated Riverland 8-4 and in the other game the Mount Gambier side blitzed Riverland 13-2.

In the Under 17s, Mount Gambier defeated Sunraysia 10-1 and in the reverse game Mount Gambier made it two from two.

The following day the Under 17s had a battle with Sunraysia and both teams had a win each.

In the first game Mount Gambier lost to Riverland 6-9 and in the other Sunraysia lost to Mount Gambier 6-8.

With both the Under 14 and Under 17 teams heading to the final, the pressure was on to perform on the big stage.

After having to play two extra innings the Mount Gambier Under 14 team came up trumps, beating Riverland in the tight battle to be named Country Champions.

In the Under 17’s game, it was a different story with Mount Gambier going down to Sunraysia, despite many chances the side failed to convert opportunities.
