Anzac Day clash an important outing for both North and South

South Gambier v North Gambier

South Gambier and North Gambier will face off once again tomorrow in the Limestone Coast Football Netball League’s annual Anzac Day Clash at Blue Lake Sports Park.

The Dees are coming off an interesting result last Friday as they shared the points with West Gambier in a 75-all draw.

North on the other hand are coming off a tough loss to the Roos back in early April as West downed them by 31.

In last year’s Anzac Day clash the Dees got the better of the Tigers, winning by 22 points.

This time around, Sam Stafford and Toby de Wit will look to cause some problems for the South backline that looked shaky at some points in last week’s match.

However Harry Wright and Taylor Saffin will be up for the challenge for the Dees.

Up forward for South they will be looking to get a bit more goal production out of their forwards including Harry Fisher and Brayden Kain, who both have three goals this season.

Kain was instrumental in the Good Friday clash, kicking the score-levelling goal after the siren.

Given the heightened emotions surrounding tomorrow’s match it should be a very competitive contest, but the Dees should come out on top.

Penola v Casterton Sandford

Penola is set to host Casterton Sandford on Saturday as the Cats travel across the border to face the Eagles.

Penola has not started the season too well, with two big losses.

Meanwhile, Casterton started strong with a round one win over the reigning premiers, but stumbled in round two with a 15-point loss to Millicent.

Despite the 1-1 record, the Cats look like a very different team from last season and will certainly be a finals contender this year.

It will be interesting to see how the Cats respond to this week’s news that senior football coach Jarrod ‘Waldo’ O’Brien has announced his resignation – they just might use that as extra motivation.
Penola look set to have a tough task ahead of them as the Cats have had some solid performers to start the season including Callum Currie and Diarmid Cleary, along with new recruit Colby Munro.

If the Eagles are to register their first win they will need to find more ways to score, as Brodie Foster has kicked six of the Eagles’ nine goals for the season so far.

This makes Penola an easy side to defend due to the lack of goal scorers in the side so far.

Despite the match being played in Penola, I think the Cats will still head home with the win.

East Gambier v Millicent

East Gambier will take on Millicent on Saturday in the Doggies’ home opener at the Kennel.

The Saints have started the season well with back to back wins to kick off the year.

It’s hard to tell how the Doggies will go this season due to the small sample size as they have only seen the field once – back in round one.

In that match against the Tigers, East put up a very surprising challenge as they only fell short by five points.

If the Doggies can keep up that effort throughout the season they will definitely be a dark horse to make finals.

The addition of Trent Burgoyne to the side proved to be big for the Doggies as he looked great in their one match for the season.

For Millicent, it looks to be business as usual despite the numerous departures from the senior side.

The Saints have had some players step up for them including young Harry Gibbs who has gotten off to a great start to the season with nine goals in two games as he sits first in the goal kicking ladder.

Billy and Kalan Shanks have also been very solid to start the season.

Both have been top players in the side for their first two games and will certainly give the Doggies a tough task on Saturday.

I think the Saints will come out on top in this, however the Doggies are certain to put up a good fight.
