Artist makes mark on coast

People who strolled the shores at Beachport last week may have come across artwork and uplifting words by artist Jane Skeer, crafted from seaweed and patterns drawn in the sand.

Ms Skeer said she had created art like this in streets and parks around Adelaide for 12 months and decided to continue the artful kindness in Beachport when she was visiting family.

“I started writing things like ‘love’ and nice, kind words,” she said.

“I was trying to find a way to be kinder to people and give them a hug without actually giving them a hug.”

Ms Skeer said her goal was to highlight the beauty of nature while bringing joy to others.

“I have just been highlighting what I see, what stands out in my eyes as an artist,” she said.

Ms Skeer said she enjoyed capturing the small moments that give her joy and saw her artwork as a way of bringing the art gallery to the public.

“I’m making a repetitive pattern, or words, to highlight the beauty that I see out there in the day, hoping that people will respond and it might make someone else just smile slightly,” she said.

She said art gave quieter people like herself a voice and she believed nature and love were very important in life.

Ms Skeer was born in Mount Gambier and grew up in Millicent.

She currently lives in Adelaide but will soon venture overseas after recently receiving the prestigious Samstag Award in Adelaide.

The award will take her overseas for 12 months and she plans to travel to Glasgow in August, where she hopes to continue producing similar art.

Ms Skeer is a recent art school graduate who graduated with first-class honours.

She has shown work all over Australia and did a residency in Fort Kochi in India last year.

Ms Skeer undertakes a 10km walk every day and said each time she looks for something in nature that she finds beautiful, which she then makes beautiful for everybody else.

“I see it as drawing, I say that I’m walking and I’m drawing, but I’m using nature as my material,” she said.

“I like things that do not leave a footprint on the land.

“Be curious, life is amazing.

“Look for the good in everything, there’s always good, we have got to look for it though.”
