Arts group brings splash of colour to Millicent

The Millicent Domain’s “hit- ting wall” has a new public artwork to celebrate its “sense of community”.

The Imagine Millicent Arts Group – IMAG – is a committee dedicated to increasing social and economic opportunities for Millicent through the creation of public art works.

The group believes that public art creates a sense of culture and community and provides numerous tourism opportunities for the township and district.

Their latest mural comes courtesy of local artist Melanie Spurling who has embraced the themes of wind and water and infused it with her own unique artistic style.

Ms Spurling said wind and water were themes IMAG and the Wattle Range Council had embraced as “they are the two key natural elements of Millicent”.

Ms Spurling got the go ahead to begin working on the mural from the council’s Engineering Services Director Peter Halton, who she said had been “instrumental in getting the artwork approved”.

In addition to Ms Spurling, other members of the IMAG committee came out to help as part of a working bee, taking turns to do the base coat and paint in the preliminary colours.

Ms Spurling said past projects by IMAG included commissioning artist Mimby Jo Robinson to paint the Wall of the Water Goddess in George Street in 2018, painting a communal piano to give joy to residents both young and old (2018) and decorating bikes to commemorate the Great Vic Bike Ride coming through Millicent in 2019.

“Our biggest coup to date has been commissioning Melbourne ‘maximist’ artist Kitt Bennett in 2019 to paint a Giant Squid on the town’s skate park, which has drawn national attention,” she said.
