Baseball bounces back from tough break

After an interruption to the return round due to corella damage, baseball fans were finally able to grab the deck chair, slip on their sunscreen and slap on a hat and head to a diamond last
weekend.

The first round of the 2021/22 Mount Gambier and District Baseball League season was a case of two games, but two completely different results.

Millicent played host to a hungry Tigers outfit looking to kick start the second half of the year with a bang.

Millicent/Federals’ start set the scene for what was a long day at the office.

Errors, Pass balls and dropped catches in the first innings allowed Tigers to score seven runs and all but shut the gate.

Another seven runs over the next two innings saw the scoreboard read Tigers 14 and Millicent/Federals zero.

Millicent had one last chance to have a go at getting some respect back.

The hosts finally they did by getting three runs over the plate but it was all too late and the game was called.

Big game performance from Jesse Foster with Three safe hits.

Baseball returned to Mount Gambier at the unusual setting of the back field of Blue Lake Sports Park.

The Centrals and South Indians contest was the first Division 1 game on that field in over 10 years, but it proved to be an absolute nail bitter.

Centrals started the game with a number of cavalry missing including stars Dylan Chuck and Kyall McLean.

This meant South had an opportunity to break Centrals’ win streak.

Nathan Meinck was given the job of coach and saw it as his opportunity to put himself of the mound.

Runs hits and walks was in-store and the crowd loved it.

South Key players in Dean Hamilton, Bruce Morale and Damien O’Dine were all at their best again and an upset was on the cards.

The result was 10 runs to 10 in the ninth and South could smell a victory.

Unfortunately, it was not to be, and it was heartbreak for the Indians when a Centrals team got their nose back in front by a single margin.

A big game performance from Nathan Meinck with a couple hits, a solid pitching effort and the win kept Centrals undefeated on top of the ladder.
