The near-$500,000 upgrade to the former Beachport Railway Sation has been officially opened.
The colonial-era building has been the base for the Beachport Bowling Club for almost 60 years and bowlers contributed $30,000 to the extensive renovations.
Member for Barker Tony Pasin said he was pleased the Federal Government was able to deliver funding of $165,000 via the Local Road and Community Infrastructure Program towards this council led project.
“Those living in Beachport are set to benefit from recent building renewal works, including a refurbished kitchen and bar at the Beachport Bowling Club,” Mr Pasin said.
“It’s fantastic to see the completion of the new Beachport Bowling Club for the local community and visitors to enjoy.”
Wattle Range Council contributed $253,000 to the project and Mayor Des Noll said the Beachport Bowling Club was a significant facility for the seaside community.
“This building has a rich history of community service over the many years since its original construction as the Beachport Railway Station,” he said.
“It was the terminus of a spur line from Mount Gambier to Beachport.
“As well as being the home of the Beachport Bowling Club, it delivers to the community many other opportunities for its use.
“The re-development will make it a sought-after function facility.
“Congratulations to the Beachport community for a very exciting outcome.”
The freehold of the leased building is set to be transferred from the council to the bowling club.
