Beachport Jetty maintenance upgrade nears

The $4.5m upgrade to the Beachport Jetty is scheduled to start early this year.

Maintenance works will improve the jetty’s safety including replacing 31 deteriorated iron piles with steel ones, reinstating cross bracing and replacing the decking, kerbing and handrails.

It is being funded by the State Government as part of its $20m Marine Stimulus Package and was the subject of a development application lodged by Planning SA.

The Department for Infrastructure and Transport expects to finish the work late 2022.

Dating back to the 1880s, the 772 metre Beachport Jetty is on the State Heritage List and it is the second longest structure of its type in South Australia.

Although the jetty is not the responsibility of Wattle Range Council, talks between the two tiers of government have been under way for several months.

Council chief executive Ben Gower said the timing of the maintenance works would take into account the needs of tourists and professional lobster fishers.

Council engineering services director Peter Halton told the July council meeting that he hoped that any salvaged material could be made available to the Beachport District Development Association and the Lions Club of Beachport and Rivoli Bay.
