Beer and barbecue festival cooks with gas

Australia’s biggest beer, barbecue and music festival is heading to the Limestone Coast this weekend, with Mount Gambier’s Rail Lands to be filled with fun.

Highlights of the highly-anticipated brewer lineup include Sydney’s Bracket Brewing and One Drop Brewing Co. along with The Mill Brewery and Sure Brewing from Victoria.

These cutting-edge Aussie brewers are rarely seen outside major cities and will join an all-star crew of local Limestone Coast heroes like Beachport, Little Rippa, Loophole, Noodledoof and Woolstore breweries.

The “Not Beer” lineup for the South East Beer & barbecue Fest includes quality drops from Mount Gambier’s Good Intentions Wine Co, Crooked Tooth and Limus Wine, plus McLaren Vale’s Slow Lane, and for those up for something a little harder, Penola’s Mulligan’s will be serving up ice cold rum and drys all weekend.

But what’s beer without a barbecue?

Punters can already get their lips smacking over Burn City Smokers (VIC) classic USA low and slow, Whyalla’s Smokey Uppercuts and Mount Gambier’s own Lumberjack’s barbecue plus a rock star collab between Pirate Life Kitchen’s Rocky Oliveria and the team behind Australia’s best beef, Mayura Station.

Filipino barbecue by Sydney’s Hoy Pinoy will be firing up along with Adelaide’s best fried chicken from Cheekies Hot Chicken.

If that’s not enough, there’ll be an unmissable collaboration between the festival’s barbecue curators Kirby Shearing from Elementary by Soul Co and the Barossa Valley’s Alana Brabin, who also curates the menu for the Adelaide Beer and barbecue Festival in July.

The festival is much more than beer and barbecue with a live music and entertainment lineup across two stages over the long weekend.

Headlining Saturday’s event will be The Smith Street Band, garage rock with a healthy dose of social commentary from Bad//Dreems, Melbourne’s The Pretty Littles, Adelaide’s Blush & LOLA, and Mount Gambier’s groove disciples Sexy As Shit.

Sunday will feature Regurgitator headlining alongside Geelong’s seminal Magic Dirt.

From the APY Lands rising hip hop stars, and fresh off winning five gongs at the South Australian Music Awards, DEM MOB, Adelaide’s electro upstarts Tonix, Street Legal and Mums Favourite plus local heroes Stokes.

The event will be hosted by Beer & Barbecue Fest royalty, Double J’s country outlaw Henry Wagons, who’ll also be strumming some tunes over the weekend.

The inaugural Mount Gambier festival experience will also roll out BMX and skating demonstrations, the Southern Steak Showdown and Backyard barbecue Championships, masterclass panel discussions with brewers and chefs, a hotdog eating contest, axe throwing, a tattoo parlour, markets, a silent disco and the iconic Beer and barbecue Fest’s Beer Bod Wet T-Shirt Competition will make its regional debut.
