Bell trial delayed until late 2022

Independent Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell has had his fraud trial delayed until October 2022.

Mr Bell has pleaded not guilty to misappropriating public funds while working for an independent learning centre before he was elected to the House of Assembly as a Liberal MP in 2014.

His trial was scheduled to begin in February but Mr Bell has challenged the actions of the Independent Commissioner Against Corruption (ICAC).

Mr Bell has been granted special leave to appeal to the High Court which may not be heard until February.

District Court Judge Simon Stretton said on Monday the High Court decision could “fundamentally affect” the evidence and moved the trial to October next year.

The later trial date was sought by the prosecution and defence lawyers.
