The Castec Rural Pioneers have received commitment for returning big man, Duom Dawam for the 2022 NBL1 South season.
Head coach Richard Hill made it a priority to retain Duom within the club in 2022.
Across 13 games in 2021, Duom averaged 18 points per game, 10 rebounds and 1.2 assists.
These stats show his outstanding progress and development in his first season with Mount Gambier, being awarded the clubs most consistent men’s player for the 2021 season
“Whilst his numbers were impressive it was his improvement and growth that impressed me most,” Hill said.
“I’m looking forward to this continuing next season as he has significantly more to give as an individual, and as part of our evolving group.
“Coming in with more of a football background, he proved to be our most consistent performer; Duom was a surprise packet for us last season.”
Duom, relocated from Melbourne in early 2021 for the opportunity to compete within the NBL1 South competition.
After playing a little organised basketball before his arrival in Mount Gambier, Duom saw great opportunity in developing his game under Richard Hill and the club in Mount Gambier.
Duom’s story is a true testament to the work that he has put in, on and off the court.
The NBL1 South conference and the Pioneers Basketball Club provide an opportunity for young athletes to develop and achieve at higher levels.
In the clubs first NBL1 South season the Castec Rural Pioneers posted nine wins from thirteen games but unfortunately had the season cut short when the cancellation of the season occurred due to an extended lockdown in Victoria.
The club’s recruiting drive is in full swing, looking to add size and depth to the core group of players from the 2021 season.
Mount Gambier hopes to make more announcements about returning players and new signings for the 2022 season in the coming weeks.
