Birds of a feather stick together for 100 years

The Mount Gambier Poultry and Pigeon Club will fly into its 100th celebrations with a show this Sunday from 9am at the Mount Gambier Showgrounds.

The club was first formed in 1923 when a meeting of poultry breeders united to advance their interest in the South East, led by Leo Morris.

The first show was held in August the following year at the old showgrounds with about 400 entries from exhibitors across Victoria and South Australia.

Mrs D McNamara was an integral member of the club in its earliest years and as such was awarded the first life membership in 1928.

Mount Gambier Poultry and Pigeon Club longest living member Ken Scott has been involved with the club for nearly 80 years.

Mr Scott was involved with the club through his father Tom and his uncle Fred Miles who was one of the biggest waterfowl showmen in Australia.

“He (Fred) won everywhere and his ducks are even still talked about today, what they were like,” he said.

The Mount Gambier Poultry and Pigeon Club built their showpen at the current Mount Gambier Showgrounds in 1956.

“The stonework was donated by Mr Saval and putting the shed up, Mr H Cole organised to get the builders in to build the shed,” Mr Scott said.

“Mr H Cole well he was a builder, so they supplied the stone and they erected it.

“All the woodwork was done by the Dowdell brothers and the roof, in those days we could not afford too much so they had all the fence around in the old showgrounds the iron was taken off that and put on the roof.”

Mr Scott said the club would not be where it is today without the help of dedicated volunteers such as the late Eric Lewis and Harold Jones.

“The volunteers are what’s kept it going,” he said.

“The Mount Gambier Show A&H Society have been very good to us, anything we have ever wanted they usually help us.

“It’s a good little show.

“It will be a terrific show (this Sunday) a lot of birds and a lot of people.”
