Bowlers get on a roll

The Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association recently competed in the Victorian Inter Group Championships for the second time, winning four silver medals.

The Mount Gambier association was only expecting minimal achievements but was overwhelmed with four events medalling and placing of fifth in the J & L Clifton Shield, only finishing 18 points behind the winner.

The Mount Gambier side travelled to Ballarat on the long weekend to compete against teams from Northern Districts, Ballarat Blue, Warrnambool Orange, Ballarat Gold, Heytesbury, South/Eastern and Warrnambool Blue.

Each team comprised 26 players, of which 10 different team disciplines were fielded.

The Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association showed that it was competitive winning medals in its second time at the championships.

The first player to win a silver medal was the Ladies Singles player of Serena Bourn who happened to be last year’s champion.

Serena won five of her seven games finishing one game short of the winner (11-8 vs WO, 15-0 vs BB, 16-10 vs ND, 18-10 vs SE, 10-13 vs WB, 15-11 vs H, 10-11 vs BG).

The Ladies Pairs team of Keisha Pearson and Fiona Pearson had five wins, defeating the undefeated team in their last game to take the silver medal by half a percent. (9-11 vs SE, 15-9 vs WB, 16-15 vs H, 13-11 vs BG, 14-15 vs WO, 25-5 vs BB, 16-5 vs ND).

The Ladies Triples team took home the silver medal, with the team of Nola Spencer, Shirley Gifford and Jennifer Bowering going into the last day with four wins and then winning their last game to secure the silver. (7-16 vs WO, 20-9 vs BB, 10-9 vs ND, 14-7 vs SE, 12-11 vs WB, 14-10 vs H, 14-8 vs BG).

The Mount Gambier Mixed Fours team of Fiona Rochow, Veronica Opie, Gary Bowering and Stephen Von Duve also medalled and won a silver with four wins and two draws (18-7 vs BB, 11-11 vs H, 11-11 vs BG, 11-12 vs WO, 18-8 vs WB, 19-12 vs ND, 24-7 vs SE).

Men’s Singles – Coehen Keppels

Men’s Pairs – Daniel Langdon and Tony Bowditch – 2 wins and 1 draw

en’s Triples – Josh Ferrazzola, Thomas Butler and Zac Pearson – 1 win and 1 draw

Ladies Fours – Bronwyn Hill, Tanya Burke, Emma Freemantle and Heather Glynn – 3 wins

Men’s Fours – Trevor Williams, Kevin Burn, Garry Burke and Craig Pearson – 4 wins

Mixed Pairs – Nicola Bowditch and Brad Errock 4 wins

All the regions’ points were tallied for the J & L Clifton Trophy with the final placings being Warrnambool Orange 88, Ballarat Gold 87, Northern District 83, Warrnambool Blue 78, Mount Gambier – 70, South/Eastern 66, Heytesbury 65 and Ballarat Blue 23.
