In perfect weather conditions the Port MacDonnell Bowls Club held its Men’s and Ladies Club Championship Fours sponsored by She’s Apples/Judy Grosvenor and Herron ToddWhite/GJ McEachern.
The women’s grand final was fought between Heather Richards, Judy Grosvenor, Jan Dowdell and Sharon Perryman and the opposing team of Jennie Tilley, Carol Schmidt, Roma Henderson and Nell Lucas.
Richards took out the trophy 11-6.
The men’s decider played between Tim Wrightson, Keith Dowdell, Wayne Dowdell and Des Horrigan and the Paul Weir team of Barrie Schmidt, Michael Glynn and John Naismith.
Wrightson’s crew proved too good emerging on top 14-9.
The Mid Week Pennants competition went to plan for Port MacDonnell’s Red team which defended home turf from Mount Gambier RSL Blue.
Lorraine Mackereth, Keith Dowdell, Heather Richards and Bill Richards won 38-19, while Elaine Pruis, Jan Dowdell, Kevin Henderson and Robert Hutchesson sealed the overall triumph with a 37-15 victory.
Port MacDonnell Blue was not quite as successful going down to Mount Gambier Red by 18 shots despite Joe Pruis, Chris Negline, Danny Gaut and Terry Seiler winning their rink 26-23.
The top grade of the Ladies Friday Pennants round was an unforgettable affair.
Despite the long road trip to Kingston, Port MacDonnell came back with a good win by a single shot thanks to Heather Richards, Elaine Pruis, Jennie Tilley and Carol Schmidt covering the loss on Judith Grosvenor’s rink.
More success followed in Division 2 where Port MacDonnell knocked over Millicent 57 shots to 44.
Lyn Vanderley, Shirley Taylor, Heather Fox and Chery Doddridge had a good 31-12 to make up for the loss of Marilyn Sutton.
Saturday’s Open Pennants affair was also a high-scoring battle between Port MacDonnell and Mount Gambier RSL Blue.
Despite Bill Richards and Tim Wrightson both winning their respective rinks, was not enough to cover Chris Richards’ 29-21 defeat as the Bay went down by four shots.
Port MacDonnell’s Division 3 outfit managed to get on the winnings side of a tight battle.
Things were not looking too great when the Terry Seiler and Danny Gaut led rinks went down.
However, a great effort by Jimmy Williams, Bruce Bain, Donald Forbes and Kel Butler was enough to get Port MacDonnell the points on the road trip to Robe by 16 shots.
Another victory was recorded in Division 4 when Port MacDonnell overcame Beachport South by six shots.
After Cheryl Doddridge and Bill McGeregor could not lead their sides to victories, a 10-shot win by Ben Tilley, Chris Negline, Rod Sutton and Justin Brown sealed the deal.
Port MacDonnell will hold it’s Christmas Ham, Cake and Pudding Mixed Fours day this Sunday, while a Christmas dinner will be held six days later.
