Bowlers accept bayside invitation

Port MacDonnell Bowling Club held its 14th annual invitation Men’s Fours recently.

The event was supported by major sponsors being Versace Home Builders, Grant District Council, Bendigo Bank, MGA Insurance and Gambier Earth Movers.

President Terry Seiler welcomed teams from Tranmere, Toorak-Burnside, Loxton, Upper and Lower South East, Hamilton, Geelong, Portland, Nhill, Hopetown and Corowa (NSW).

Play commenced at 9.30am in perfect conditions for bowling with 26 teams playing one game of 21 ends before lunch and one game of 21 ends in the afternoon.

Leaders after the first day were Daniel Langdon and Ronald Cox.

The second day of play started at 9am in perfect weather for bowling with one game of 21 ends before lunch and one game of 21 ends in the afternoon.

At the end of play it was a tight finish between Dean Wilkinson’s team and Bryan Vorwerk’s side, with Wilkinson taking first place.

Both had four wins each and went down to shots up with Wilkinson winning by 1 shot 47-46.

First overall was the Mount Gambier RSL side of Graham Ellis, Andy Ashby, Robert Corner and skipper Dean Wilkinson followed by Mount Gambier – Dougal McPhail, Jim Philpott, Kym Jones and skipper Bryan Vorwerk in second place.

Day one winners were the Mount Gambier/Millicent outfit of Ben Masters, Strawb Masters, Glen Wright and skipper Daniel Langdon, with Naracoorte’s Eric Pitt, Brian Selig, Ron Garton and skipper Ian Williams securing the honours on day two.

Third position overall went the way of the Port MacDonnell side of Wayne Dowdell, Keith Dowdell, Adam Wilson and skipper Tim Wrightson, with Nhill’s Rob Byrnies, Darryl Leyonhjell, Trevor Merrett and skipper Kevin Jones claiming fourth.

Mount Gambier RSL/Mount Gambier players Brenton Wittwer, Bill Richards, Eddie Smith and skipper Ronald Cox were runners-up on day one, with the Naracoorte bowlers of Dean Williams, Terry Mahoney, David Bennett and skipper Bob Kirkland securing the spot on day two.

Game one winners on the opening day were Port MacDonnell/Geelong’s Ben Tilley, John Naismith and Jack Crowley skippered by John Hyde with the game two victory awarded to Portland’s John Pye, Chris Fleming, Mick Jennings and skipper John Rappard.

On the second day of competition, Mount Gambier RSL’s Ron Cook, John Robinson, Harry Childs and skipper Ian Moulden claimed the opening win, with Paul Truelove, Patrick Lynch, Errol Jennings and skipper Ken Smith rounding out the second victory for Robe.
