Bowls rolls into action

It was a joyous moment at the Mount Gambier RSL Bowls Club when it went back bowling after a two-week lay-off due to the COVID scare in Adelaide.

Mid-week Pennant games resumed on Wednesday with both RSL Mount Gambier teams travelling away. The Red team went to Naracoorte and although the games were very tight, it lost five shots.

The Blue team went the short distance to play Mount Gambier Blue and exactly the same result and winning margin was at hand.

The battle on the ladder between the two RSL teams remains tight with only one point separating the Blue side from its Red rivals.

Thursday’s men’s Aggregate drawn competition was played in a Triples format with a strong entry of 38 bowlers contesting.

Gavin Clements, Malcolm Williamson and Garry Walters were victorious for the day with a controlled display of bowling.

The women’s Friday Pennants was a close battle RSL’s Division One Red team losing by an agonising one-shot margin to Millicent Blue.

Again the rink skippered by Joy Bilney came out on top, but Kym Franklyn’s rink went down 22/15.

The RSL Division One Blue team had a good home win against Millicent Red gaining 12 points for the victory with Beryl Messenger’s rink successful.

A welcome win for the women’s Division 3 team arrived at Millicent. Liz Schroder led the victorious rink and the team is now in seventh place on the ladder where a 51/41 victory sealed 12 points for the team taking them off the bottom of the ladder into 7th spot.

Mount Gambier RSL’s Division 1 Red Open Pennants team continued on their merry way with a bit 84/38 victory at home to Robe.

Wins on all rinks for Deane Wilkinson, Strawb Masters and Michael Fox ensured another 16 points were add to their impressive top of the ladder total.

Mount Gambier RSL Blue had the difficult task of travelling to Kalangadoo to play on the grass rinks and came away with a 98/53 loss.

Division 2 made the road trip to Penola and played a thrilling battle, but the home team finished one-point victors despite the visitors claiming two of the three rinks.

Mount Gambier RSL Division 3 travelled to Kingston in what was a tricky fixture.

A solid performance by the team resulted in a good 95/54 win with 14 points gained overall, while Division 4 was unable to contain a strong Beachport side.
