Brakes placed on Borderline

Mother Nature has once again pulled out the stops and forced the cancellation of Saturday night’s race meeting at Borderline Speedway.

The event was to be the first of the upcoming speedway season, with the South Australian Sprintcar title along with round 5 of the Formula 500s, Street Stocks and the junior sedans on the program to make for an action-packed night of racing.

After a couple of weeks of consistent rain it has made preparing the track a hard task, preventing machinery from working to prepare the track, along with the infield.

Borderline Speedway president Cary Jennings said the cancellation of the season opener was disappointing

“We were looking forward to opening night, but it was the right call not only for the competitors who were travelling (but also) the safety of the spectators,” he said.

“It was after careful consideration with Bill Barrows and the track crew the track was unworkable in its current state with some very soft patches.

“Along with the current weather forecast for this week, the track and infield will need a longer stretch of dry weather to make it workable.

On the upside, we will now turn all our focus to December 10 for the next meeting which will be the Ti Bills SA Wingless Sprint Series round.”

In other speedway news, the promoters of the Murray Bridge Speedway, Borderline Speedway, Avalon Raceway and Premier Speedways have elected to retain the iconic SPEEDWEEK title for the historic tournament that annually falls during the Christmas-New Year holidays.

With so many teams unable to race many recent laps in Victoria, due to the recent spate of wet weather, organisers, teams and fans will relish the chance to finally get on the highway to lock in some kilometres and killer laps with the hope of warmer temps and bluer skies over December and January.

The prize money payout for the 2022/2023 Sprintcar SPEEDWEEK has been announced to go along with the rounds from December 26 to January 1.

Over $32,000 is up for grabs over the A, B and C-Mains for each of the four rounds, with more than $128,000 in prize money for the week.

Discussion is currently taking place also regarding an overall series points fund incentive that is expected to be revealed towards the end of the week.

$25,650 will be paid out in the A-Mains alone.
