Nangwarry Primary School students are building a brighter future through a set of community projects made up of recycled and re-purposed materials.
Nangwarry Primary School Principal Jess Herrewyn said students had embraced the concept, brainstorming and planning ideas in the first few weeks of the current school term.
“The projects started last week and students are hoping to chip away at small jobs every Friday in the dedicated time,” she said.
“Once we start to get volunteers that can come in, we will work around that as well.”
Miss Herrewyn said the school was appealing for businesses to donate materials that could be used for gardening, painting or arts projects.
“We are also looking for volunteers with skills like carpentry and using power tools because a lot of our kids will want to learn but the teachers do not necessarily know how to do it,” she said.
“We would like to thank Timberlink for donating wood and Gambier Earth Movers for donating half a truck full of dirt for the garden.”
The students have already made a start on the sensory garden project.
“We are hoping to create a sensory garden, so we are trying to put lavender in to appeal to the sense of smell and children can stop and smell the flowers. We want to incorporate pavers with calming strategies on them around the garden,” Miss Herrewyn said.
“Students planted plants they found from around the school and watered them and the Junior Primary have planted seeds so they can keep adding to it.”
The upcoming projects include repurposing pallets into a mural, garden beds, outside seating and outdoor board games.
