Bulldogs ready for run chase

East Gambier v West Gambier

East Gambier has a decent chase ahead of it on day two of its Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association round four match against West Gambier.

Having bowled the Roos out for 190, the East Gambier batsmen survived a nervous two overs at the end of day one.

On Saturday James Sullivan and Aiden Creasey will return to the crease as they attempt to build a strong opening partnership which can put a dent in West Gambier’s total.

East Gambier still have some good runs in the shed with Dion Stratford and Emerson Marks yet to come.

Alex Hentschke and Ben Robinson will also be able to provide some important runs, giving East full belief it can chase down the total.

The crucial players for West Gambier will be Bray Stephenson and Sam Willis who will both likely take the ball at the start of the day.

If either can break through early and get through to the middle order then East Gambier could be in real trouble.

Both East Gambier and West Gambier will be hoping to avoid their second defeat of the season and with the match evenly poised it could go either way.

West Gambier will have the slight advantage with the runs on the board but East will be full of belief it can get the job done.

Mil Lel v South Gambier

Mil Lel is on track to bounce back to the winners list after its first loss of the season in round 3.

South Gambier was bowled all out for 138 early in day one giving Mil Lel plenty of time to bat.

South Gambier found some good breakthrough that has it on the brink of breaking through to the lower order.

However the runs on the board is a cause for concern, at 4/88 Mil Lel only require 51 more runs with six wickets in hand.

However the tables can turn quickly with a good start from South Gambier and the match could be well in its favour.

Dale Bachmann and Toby Grigg will both resume at the crease having got going last weekend, however the pair will need to start again and build a healthy partnership to get Mil Lel over the line.

For South Gambier this is a great chance to finally get a win on the board after coming quite close in the last two weeks, however early wickets will be the name of the game against a Mil Lel side that will be confident it can finish the job.

Penola v North Sportsman’s

Penola is on track to secure its first win of the season and hand North Sportsman’s its first defeat when the two sides meet for day two of their Barber Shield match on Saturday.

Penola started the match superbly, after being bowled out for 179 the Eagles ripped through North’s top order to have the visitors reeling at 4/25 at the end of the first day of play.

With the important wickets of Elliot Fisher and Mathew Robinson already back in the shed North Sportsman’s will need a big performance to win the match.

The league’s top scorer Nick McInerney will start at the crease on the beginning of day two and is undoubtedly Penola’s most desired wicket.

McInerney could take the match away from Penola and dismissing him early will be a big confidence booster for the side.

North still has some handy bats throughout the order with Nicholas Brown still at the crease and Mitch Lewis and Declan Kenny yet to come.

Joshua Doyle proved the troubling bowler early taking two wickets, and he’ll attempt to add to his tally as the Eagles attempt to defend their total.

Michael Waters will also be important with the ball for Penola as it attempts to claim North’s final six wickets.

With 154 runs still to chase it will not be an easy task for North Sportsman’s and Penola will certainly believe it has the upper hand, however it could only take one big partnership for North to tear the match open.

Expecting both sides to push each other hard, North will not roll over easily as it attempts to remain undefeated this season.
