Busy week across region’s greens

It was another busy week at Mount Gambier Bowls Club starting Wednesday with both Open Midweek Pennant Round 8 fixtures at the Mount Gambier RSL greens.

The Reds played the RSL Blues and were able to dominate their opponents winning both rinks for a 59-24 win.

The stars of the day were the rink of Maryke Heaver, Jim Philpott, Darryl Raneberg and Ian Von Stanke who had a great day winning 36-9.

The Bryan Vorwerk skippered rink were made to work hard for their 23-15 win.

The eight points won secured third spot on the ladder and the side will now face Millicent Blue at home in Round 9.

The Blues faced top team RSL Red and found the hosts in good form, winning both rinks for a final score of 64-23.

Both Blue rinks battled hard but were unable to match their opposition and will now look to the Round 9 clash with RSL Blue to get back on track.

The Mount Gambier Ladies took to the road with Robe in sights this time for Friday’s Round 9 Pennant action and – looking to rebound from their last round loss – the ladies started well but were unable to hold out the hosts, eventually losing both rinks 43-56.

The rink of Gaylene Leggett, Mavis Edgecumbe, Maria Stabler and Beryl Versluis was on track for a win until the last end with the locals scoring four shots to secure a 27-23 victory.

The ladies will now face Naracoorte at home in the next round and will be eager to improve on their third spot on the ladder.

Saturday’s Round 9 of Lower South East Bowls Association Open led all five teams to travel across town to the Mount Gambier RSL greens as the Bob Cranwell Centre was unavailable due to another event being held at the venue.

Division 1 Reds played the RSL Blues and after a slow start was able to secure the valuable 12 points with wins on the three rinks.

The final of 81-60 scoreline was enough for the visitors to climb to third spot on the ladder.

The rink of Jim Philpott, Kristy Errock, Daniel Langdon and Brad Errock had a slow start but dominated after the break to win 28-25.

The rink of Dougie McPhail, Mick Ashby, John Reppin and Tony Bowditch was able to overcome its opponents with a 25-22 win and the rink skippered by Greg Carpenter, with a couple of big ends, was able to win 28-13.

The Division 1 Blues played top of the ladder RSL Red and the hosts showed everyone why the side sits on top, winning the three rinks for a 103-50 score.

The Blues rink of Maryka Heaver, Darryl Raneberg, Gary Hocking and Ian Von Stanke made the undefeated Chris Waugh skippered rink work hard for their 26-19 win.

The Blues will face the Reds in the Round 10 derby with both Mount Gambier teams looking for valuable premiership points.

The Division 2 bowlers enjoyed their day on the RSL greens with two wins and a draw securing 11 points with an 83-51 scoreline.

The rinks skippered by Ron Cox and Leanne Hentschke both enjoyed 16 shot wins with the rink led by Margaret Marshall able to secure a draw with the 20-20 scoreline.

The win takes the team up to second spot and they will travel to Lucindale for the next game looking to cement their position on the ladder.

The Division 3 South match ups on the RSL greens did not go to plan, with both Mount Gambier teams suffering defeats.

The Reds faced RSL Red and were able to win one rink, but with losses on the other two rinks suffered a 75-49 loss.

The rink of Don Fraser, Ron Kuhl, Athol Malseed and Steve Smith fought hard all day to lose narrowly by three shots with the final score a 16-19 win to the hosts.

The Blues played RSL Blue and despite a good effort on two rinks went down by 21 shots.

The hosts won the three rinks on their way to a 84-53 win.

The rink skippered by David Holland made their opponents work hard for a narrow 20-19 win.

The Blues will now face the Reds in the Round 10 derby as both teams will looking for valuable premiership points.
