Buyers snap up coastal land

There has been a land rush at Southend with all nine residential blocks in an expanded subdivision selling within a month.

Each block measures about a hectare (2.54 acres) and had an asking price of around $200,000.

They adjoin the first six-block stage of the subdivision and are in the vicinity of the southern side of the Southend Access Road and directly east of the township.

A Mount Gambier real estate firm and two Millicent agents listed the blocks and all three achieved multiple sales.

The success of the first two stages has increased the chances of a third stage being developed and offered for sale.

The subdivision known as the Lake Frome Estate was first mooted in 2015.

A local couple then sought regulatory approval to subdivide a portion of their 511-hectare (1249 acre) land parcel which is chiefly occupied by grazing land.

According to their plans submitted to Wattle Range Council, they wished to create residential allotments, rural living blocks and rural (farming) allotments.

Due to the nature of the development, the Adelaide-based Development Assessment Commission made the final ruling.

The developers engaged planner and former Wattle Range Council chief executive Frank Brennan as their consultant.

Despite some initial opposition from council staff, the main thoroughfare at Lake Frome Estate is named after Southend pioneer Christina Smith.
