There will be plenty of show and lots of shine in Penola next month thanks to the work of a local car enthusiast.
Rebecca Agnew will host a much-anticipated show and shine on October 16 at St Mary’s Vineyard.
The event was set to be run in conjunction with the now-cancelled Penola Show and almost did not go ahead until a generous local family stepped up.
“At one point I completely stopped everything because I did not think the show and shine was going to happen anymore and then the Mulligan family from St Mary’s Vineyard offered to host the event,” Miss Agnew said.
“It is a show and shine so there will be a variety of vehicles in different categories including vintage vehicles, modern vehicles and a ute section featuring street utes, country utes, four-wheel drives and touring vehicles.”
Miss Agnew said the event would have a special focus on vans, such as panel vans and new Volkswagen vans.
“Vans are coming back in vogue from the 80’s,” Miss Agnew commented about the vans her parents grew up with.
The day will also feature prizes including a $500 grand prize to be selected by the community.
Individuals will nominate their favourite vehicle with the overall winner named at the end of the day.
The event will coincide with the St Mary’s open garden held on October 16 and 17.
“There is something for everyone including wine, gin and rum tasting, kid’s activities and food,” Miss Agnew said.
“Just about everyone drives a car so it is a common thing that unites people which is what the day is all about.
“It is about bringing people together from all walks of life, being social and having a chat which is also beneficial for mental health.
“It is about enjoying food, company and cars although the prizes are also a bit of a bonus.”
