Carols bring community together at home

Limestone Coast residents are being encouraged to switch on as the Blue Lake Carols return to our screens.

Long running event emcees Simon Fisher and Danni Reade will host the virtual Blue Lake Carols to be streamed on Facebook, Youtube and radio 5GTR FM at 7.30pm on Sunday night.

In recent years the Blue Lake Carols have seen some of its largest crowds in its 74 year history, with upwards of 5000 people gathering at Mount Gambier’s Rail Lands for a community Christmas sing-along.

In 2020 the event was moved online for the first time with the organising committee unwilling to take the risk of COVID restrictions cancelling the event at the 11th hour.

Ms Reade says that by adapting the format of the traditional concert, the community can celebrate the joy of the festive season and Mount Gambier can show the world what a talented, innovative and vibrant community we are.

The online format of the Blue Lake Carols is one that’s been echoed throughout Australia, with numerous other towns and cities also turning to technology to deliver Christmas cheer to their communities.

“The live streamed event makes the Blue Lake Carols accessible for families navigating bedtime routines, shift workers, and those with mobility issues to name just a few,” Ms Reade said.

“We have even received feedback from aged care homes interstate the Blue Lake Carols became a part of their Christmas events for their residents.

“Ultimately we want to come together as a community, but having the 2020 and soon to be 2021 events preserved online spreads the joy far beyond our borders for all to enjoy.

“We just cannot wait to see what we have in store for everyone this year!”

Performers include Gabe Strachan, Louise Adams and Gavin Clarke, Scott Maxwell, Emma Anderson and Alison Newman, Lilli Fulwood, Ben Hood, Congolese Choir, Tamara Seeley, Fiona Unger, Gajanan Frost, Jordy Jones, Simon Fisher and Phoenix Choir.

The Blue Lake Carols are one of the longest running carols events in South Australia.
